Click frenzy: Inside QLD’s hottest homes of the year

This palatial property at 49-109 Tallebudgera Connection Rd, Tallebudgera, was the most popular home listing in the country this year.

THE verdict is in; Queensland has the hottest home in the country.

From dream homes to fixer uppers, the obsession with property in 2021 has reached fever pitch, culminating in a billionaire’s Gold Coast mansion being crowned the most popular listing in Australia on Realestate.com.au.

Half of the most viewed homes across the nation so far this year are in the Sunshine State, including a waterfront home in a little known suburb, a motorcycling champ’s star-studded pad, and an acreage estate that had security on hand when it sold for a suburb record at auction.

One thing most of these properties have in common is larger-than-average land size and water or hinterland views — reflecting our post-pandemic preference for more space and a better lifestyle.

These are the homes for sale in Queensland this year that got the nation clicking:

1. 49-109 Tallebudgera Connection Rd, Tallebudgera

This property at 49-109 Tallebudgera Connection Rd, Tallebudgera, attracted more than 84,000 views on Realestate.com.au.

Billionaire Riyu Li’s European-inspired mansion at Tallebudgera has led the click frenzy since January, taking out top spot in Queensland’s — and the nation’s — most viewed properties listed on realestate.com.au.

Known as Bellagio La Villa and for sale for a cool $33m, the palatial estate on close to five acres has notched up a huge 84,091 views since its listing for sale by Amir Prestige.

Mr Li was initially chasing a whopping $50 million for the property and had planned a major wellness and gardens project on the site with a hotel and 108 units, but the project was vetoed last year by the city council.

There’s even an indoor pool and spa.

Bellagio La Villa reportedly cost more than $8 million to build on land worth $7 million in 2006.

The two-level house has a massive floor area of 2450 sqm, 10 bedrooms — all with ensuites, a separate caretaker’s cottage, two horse stables, an orchard, a heated indoor pool and sauna and a five-car garage that doubles as a ballroom.

2. 281 Grassdale Road, Gumdale

This sprawling acreage property at 281 Grassdale Rd, Gumdale, was one of the most viewed homes in Australia on realestate.com.au.

Security guards were on hand and some 250 people watched on as this acreage property in Brisbane’s outer suburbs sold under the hammer for $5.05 million in March.

The sale of 281 Grassdale Road smashed Gumdale’s sale price record by nearly $2 million.

The spectacular six-bedroom, five-bathroom mansion on 1ha of land attracted 12 registered bidders after a three-week campaign that saw more than 700 people pass through its doors.

3. 29 Doyles Road, Balnagowan

This propertry at 29 Doyles Road, Balnagowan, was the third most viewed in the state in 2021.

A dreamy waterfront home in a tiny North Queensland suburb — that few would have even heard of — was the most viewed property in the state this year.

Attracting more than 52,000 online eyeballs, the five-bedroom, three-bathroom house with, wait for it, parking for 24 cars, is on the market with Harcourts Coastal – Broadbeach, despite its rural location in a town of some 400 people in the Mackay region.

Owned and built by Wade Moohin of Moohin Homes, the property has a 112m river frontage and is the ultimate family playground on 2.3ha.

Features include a bar room, kids retreat, 12m saltwater pool, four-bay garage and an array of shed and garage space.

Added extras include 150,000L of rain water tanks, a bore, solar panels, and a separate studio complete with its own wet bar, games room, store room, patio and bathroom.

There’s room for the whole family — and their friends — here.

4. ‘Stonelea Estate’ 430 Cooroy Mountain Rd, Cooroy Mountain

With a list of features bigger than the 160 sqm walk-in wardrobe, this Cooroy Mountain property is one of a kind.

Taking out fourth spot is this spectacular Noosa hinterland home.

Surrounded by panoramic views of the hinterland and the ocean, ‘Stonelea’ was crafted into the ridge line of Cooroy Mountain.

You can arrive by road or helicopter to this five-bedroom, five-bathroom home on 2.6ha, which has the feel of a luxurious Italian villa.

Six metre-high cathedral ceilings tower above a series of living spaces, including a dual-sided fireplace, that open out to a 12m heated pool with a wet edge that flows down a wall to the lawn below.

The 12m wet-edge pool features portholes into a subterranean media room.

The pool has two portholes through which you can see into a subterranean media room, with a 2000-bottle wine cellar.

The kitchen features a giant island bench, topped in leather-honed black granite, and some of the five bedrooms have private kitchenettes.

The house has a master ensuite that bathroom dreams are made of.

Yet the hero of the property is the master suite and ensuite, which is clad in white-leathered marble and has a 160 sqm dressing room.

With a $15.5 million price tag, this is property porn at its finest, with the listing attracting more than 41,000 views.

The property recently changed agents and is now listed with Tom Offermann of Tom Offermann Real Estate.

5. 290 Colman Road, Coomera

Aussie motorcycling champion Mick Doohan opened his Gold Coast estate to celebrities seeking to quarantine in secluded luxury in a bid to revive the local film industry during the pandemic.

The property has hosted a star-studded cast of celebrity guests, including Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie and Pink, and was rented to Johnny Depp and then-wife Amber Heard during filming of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.

It’s little wonder then that it was so popular among homehunters.

Known as Diamond Head, the 18ha estate on the Coomera River boasts panoramic views, huge river frontage and a lavish mansion.

The Diamond Head estate has a huge river frontage.

The house has eight bedrooms with heated marble floors, a 2000-bottle wine cellar, cinema, gym, pool rooms, four offices, a private jetty and a landing strip for a light aircraft with space to house a helicopter.

It is still up for sale via an expressions of interest campaign with Michael Willems and Jackson Rameau, of Ray White.

6. 3 Mobbs Place, Ormeau

This property at 3 Mobbs Place Ormeau, sold within 24 hours of being listed for sale.

Talk about an appetite for acreage!

This dual-living, acreage property attracted more than 10,000 online views, 150 direct inquiries and two written offers before selling within 24 hours.

Marketed by Emil Juresic, of NGU Real Estate, the estate sold to a couple from Burleigh Heads for a suburb record of $2.125 million.

The 5900 sqm estate comprises two homes on separate lots.

The first has five bedrooms and three bathrooms, while the second is a three-bedroom, one-bathroom house on a 2200sqm parcel with a self-contained shed.

This property was the most viewed in Australia at the time of listing and continued to attract interest online well after its sale.

The property comprises two large homes on separate lots — perfect for a dual living arrangement.

7. 345 Marshall Road, Tarragindi

This property at 345 Marshall Road, Tarragindi, is a former Mater Prize Home from 1964.

But not all of the most popular properties are A-list abodes.

Coming in seventh spot is this quirky, 1960s house in Brisbane’s inner south that was once a Mater Prize Home.

The home is a time capsule in that it hasn’t changed since the day it was built.

The house is a complete time-capsule inside, as very little has been altered since the day it was built.

The owner even has a copy of the original flyer advertising the prize home from 1964.

Despite the interest it attracted, the home failed to sell at auction earlier this year and is back on the market for offers over $899,000 — a far cry from the $75,000 it sold for in 1982.

8. 157 K P McGrath Drive, Elanora

This property at 157 K P McGrath Dr, Elanora, was one of the most viewed listings on Realestate.com.au for the year.

A local builder snapped up this Gold Coast renovator, which was one of the state’s most popular listings.

The four-bedroom fixer-upper fetched $750,000 in April.

Just a basic brick and tile home, the attraction was its proximity to the ever-trendy Palm Beach and the fact it occupies a double block.

This Elanora fixer-upper was a popular lsting on Realestate.com.au this year.

This unique, custom-designed home in the sought-after suburb of Camp Hill settled this week in a deal worth $2.9 million.

Marketing agent Denis Njazar of Place – Woolloongabba said the property attracted more than 300 groups during the campaign — many of whom purely wanted to have a sticky beak inside the home.

“The style is fairly unique, particularly for the south side of the river,” Mr Njazar said.

“I think people just loved the street appeal … and then the internal styling, with the exposed timber rafters, high ceilings and just spaciousness.”

This property at 82 Newman Ave, Camp Hill, was one of the most viewed listings in Queensland on Realestate.com.au for the year.

But the public almost didn’t get the chance to see the five-bedroom, Californian-style home at all.

“It was under contract before we launched with two buyers, but they couldn’t obtain finance, so it could have sold before even being seen,” Mr Njazar said.

This custom-designed home has just sold for $2.9m.

Owner and builder Steve Stamatiou of Mati Constructions, who specialises in building boutique Brisbane homes, said it was good to see the public could appreciate a custom, quality build.

“It’s definitely moving away from Hamptons, but still keeping that traditional but also very contemporary design, with clean lines and not so much wall panelling,” Mr Stamatiou said.

“We tried to design it almost for penthouse-style living, where you get a decent sized yard, but the low maintenance.”

The kitchen is minimalist, rustic and Californian in design.

10. 13-15 Eagleview Court, Bonogin

This property at 13-15 Eagleview Court, Bonogin, was one of the most viewed properties in Queensland this year.

This Gold Coast hinterland home sold under the hammer earlier this month for $2.29 million — and it’s easy to see why.

Known as Haven Retreat, the lure of this property is lifestyle, immersed in the surrounds of Mudgeeraba Forest.

The architect-designed, five-bedroom home comprises a number of connecting pavilions and sits on a huge, 5000 sqm of land.

Its resort-style features include an infrared sauna, BOSE surround sound system, lifestyle pavilion, separate studio, mineral pool, fire pit and an outdoor bath.

It also sold with development approval to operate as bed and breakfast accommodation.

Imagine relaxing in your very own outdoor bath tub!
